In the course of my work on Green Barley Essence, I believe I have established that it has the effect of suppressing cancerous cells. I produced mice infected with cancer by inoculating cancerous cells into the abdomen of mice of a special type, and then divided them into a group given the components of Green Barley Essence and another group not given the Essence. A surprising curative affect was noted in the group given Green Barley Essence. Efforts were then made to determine what component of the Essence had an anticancer activity.


These efforts led to the discovery that a water-soluble protein containing the enzyme SOD had the effect of suppressing cancerous cells. I read a paper on this study to a conference of a professional society in 1978. A striking effect of SOD was reported in the United States. after it was clinically applied to patients with cancer in order to prevent side effects in radiotherapy.


In 1976, Takashi Sugimura, Manager of the National Cancer Research Institute of Japan, found that the charred residue of fish contains a strong carcinogenic substance, and named it Try-P1 and Try-P2. This substance is said to have 10 to 20 thousand times as much carcinogenicity as the benzopyrene contained in tobacco.


Thus, it was found that the burning residues of fish or meat we eat every day contain a carcinogenic substance. Later, it was found that when various amino acids are burned, the same mutagenic substance forms. The carcinogenic substance Try-PI and Try-P2 causes a change in human gene DNA, and acts as a trigger for its growth into cancer cells.


I have discovered in Green Barley Essence an enzyme which renders this carcinogenic substance non-hazardous. This enzyme is a heme protein. In 1979, we succeeded in extracting the heme protein, and reported this development in a meeting of the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Science. This caused a great sensation.

Professor Takekazu Horio commented: "The result is indeed clear. Separation and purification to that extent is an astonishing success. Among mutagenic substance, Try-P1 and Try-P2 has by far the strongest mutagenicity. Green Barley Essence has the ability to attack a substance having such powerful Mutagenicity." A group of substances called mucopolysaccharides are attracting worldwide attention as possibly valuable in the immunological treatment of cancer.

When I had the opportunity to speak about Green Barley Essence with the late Dr.Tomizo Yoshida, the Manager of the Japan Cancer Institute, he showed a great interest in the fact that it is a green juice extract of the leaves of barley. At my request he agreed to conduct an experiment at the Cancer Chemotherapeutic Centre to determine the effect of Green Barley Essence on cancer cells. Although no appreciable pharmacological effect was observed in these tests, the Essence was found to contain very large amounts of mucopolysaccharides.


Generally, mucopolysaccharides are found in large quantities in graminaceous plants. It has been confirmed that Green Barley Essence contains them in still larger amounts.
